keeper
Keeper is a tend-and-befriend style educational game in which players embody a small sprite seeking to restore her environment and help her bee neighbors.
The game scales the global crisis of declining bee populations down to actionable conservation tactics by integrating them into its narrative and gardening mechanics. It presents a calm garden populated with characters to befriend and areas to explore. Keeper evokes a cozy atmosphere and brings together elements of nature, narrative, and management games.
I worked on this project with a small team of other developers and served as the Creative Director and lead Narrative Designer. In addition to working with artists Christie McCown and Megan McAvoy to develop the characters and world of the game, I designed the structure of the story, established the quest objectives, and wrote dialogue and other in-game text.
The student development team, under the name Micropup Games, showcased Keeper at the MassDIGI Games Challenge in 2018 and took home awards for Best Serious Game and Peoples' Choice.
